about

From Django Reinhardt's 100th Birthday Special Edition - Patrick Mouloud

First version: October 1, 1940 (Paris). Twelve other versions: December 13, 1940 (Paris), May 8, 1942 (Brussels), February 1, 1946 (London, 2 catches), August 25, 1947 (RTF, Paris), February 28, 1948 (RTF, Nice), December 1948 (Concert, Brussels), January-February 1949 (Rome), October 25, 1949 (Radio, Geneva), April-May 1950 (Rome), 1950 (solo, Paris), February 1951 (Club Saint-Germain, Paris), March 10, 1953 (Paris).

Even before the new quintet recorded a first version of this theme - for a long time unreleased - Django was not satisfied with the result ('With only one clarinet, Django did not obtain the effect that he sought: it sounded Quintet. However, with two clarinets, he had an embryo of an orchestra...' Alex Combelle explains). So the piece was tested in a cabaret. Hubert Rostaing, in charge of the announcements on the microphone, tells us 'When Django told me 'We're going to play it, it's called Nuages', I stood up in front of the microphone, a little shy and announced 'Nuit d'automne' or something like that, and Django had a laughing fit...'
