about

The end of the Second World War was a time of dramatic upheaval across the world. Enormous changes took place in the music world and the swing music of the 1930s and 1940s was quickly replaced with the harder and more harmonically complex music known as 'bebop' and amongst all the seismic political and cultural changes taking place Django and his music became suddenly less popular and people moved on. Neglect first and foremost is about the neglect that Django experienced after the war and my imagination regarding this composition was firstly to do with this image I had of someone pacing up and down slowly with nowhere to go, which is what I tried to paint in my composition. Neglect can also be alluded to our natural environment as well as neglect of what is naturally beautiful and good. The violin provides the refrain of the melody - sweet and classical sounding and almost far away in the distance and the track ends with a short violin cadenza that as with 'Dark Clouds' is unresolved harmonically. As with the end of the war there was no resolution. Django died at the age of 43 in Samois sur Seine in 1953. As much as he composed, recorded and created the extent to which this man could have and should have influenced jazz music was never fully realised until many decades after his passing.
