about

The music of Sinti and Roma can quite correctly be described as 'musique métisse' - a big melding pot of styles and influences born as a direct result of endless travels through foreign lands far from their original lands. Saintes Maries de la Mer references the town in southern France where many Sinti and Roma annually travel to worship the 'black Madonna' Saint Sarah. I chose for this piece to be a cross between a Gypsy Kings/Manouche style bolero with elements of Flamenco, Manouche and Balkan music reminiscent of camp fires long into the night with nomadic people from many lands and music traditions pouring their hearts out in music and emotion. It is my most specific tribute - almost an anthem - to Sinti and Roma worldwide that I specifically wrote for this album.
