about

As with many musicians of his era Django was enormously influenced by Louis Armstrong so this track is dedicated both to the history of Django's first taste of jazz and to the history of jazz itself which was in many ways first mass popularised by Armstrong. The calypso feel references Armstrong's (and jazz music's) Caribbean/New Orleans/French roots while the violin part is reduced to a mostly accompanying role in the style of the old cafe salon orchestras and old recordings of the time. Only in the last repeated chorus does the violin also begins to 'rag' along with the trumpet (Vladimir Khusid) and clarinet (Edouard Bronson) with references to the old Dixieland/Buddy Bolden style popularised by Armstrong.
