about

Bale Boldo (Romanes for 'Revival') is my tribute to the Sinti/Manouche tradition that has been left in the wake of Django's demise in 1953, and it is a reference to the enormous revival of his music but also an underlying commentary to move forward. The harmonies in this composition whilst seemingly a typical dark minor key Gypsy style romp also contain some modern elements and the harmonic changes are unexpected in parts. Ian Date helped me to realise the harmonic potential of this track and the track begins with a ferociously difficult passage played in unison by violin and piano followed by the dark, persuasive melody and a much more 'traditional' style violin solo over the form that combines subtle elements of more modern jazz. Daniel Pliner follows my solo with a modern and very quirky and enjoyable virtuosic solo over the form that is followed by a short solo by Ian Date over a 'Charleston' feel that leads back into a refrain of the melody ending in a Hungarian czardas like ending. Musically this track is 'musique métisse' in that it combines elements of modern jazz with the Sinti-swing tradition as well as elements of old swing jazz and traditional Central European folk music.
